Idle hands: AC Schnitzer BMW X6 Falcon

Idle hands are the devil's playthings, and apparently AC Schnitzer has a lot of time on its hands. You're only required to read the first two lines of the company's press release to realize that the crew formerly known for creating rolling automotive masterworkz have officially donned their collective bouffants, made like the Fonz and jumped the shark. Here's proof: The BMW X6 Falcon.

Using the X5 Falcon as unfortunate inspiration, the X6 variant gets the same stretched out body work, giving the 'ute a 70mm wider track in the front and an additional 80mm in the rear. According to AC, extensive testing was done on the Nurburgring to hone the Falcon's high-speed prowess, aided by a new front lip, air intakes, repositioned fog lamps, side skirts and rear wing. Black or silver 22-inch Type VII wheels fill the massive arches and although it's not clear in the release, we suspect that some lowering springs were used to keep the ride-height in check.

As for power, the only models to benefit from engine tweaks are the X6 3.0d and 3.5d, boosting power to 272 hp (from 235 hp) and 310 hp (from 286 hp), respectively. And naturally, AC will sell you a set of chrome tailpipes, aluminum interior trim, pedals and floor mats emblazoned with its logo.

Hit the jump to read AC's comically overwrought press release.

Cadillac CTS-V

The Cadillac CTS-V has already proven that its impressive power stats translate nicely to the track with sub-8 minute 'Ring times and a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds. The General is also positioning its new 556-hp halo sedan as a performance bargain, having announced today that it will go on sale around November 1 with a starting price of just $59,995. That's more than $40,000 cheaper than the less powerful XLR-V, and we'd argue the CTS-V is more attractive with its v2.0 Art and Science styling and works much better as a daily driver with its back seat and usable trunk. The CTS-V also makes the larger $80,900 STS-V sedan completely irrelevant considering its 86-hp power advantage, improved aesthetics and quicker moves. Even the vaunted BMW M5 with its higher starting price of $83,900 and less powerful 500-hp 5.0L V10 engine can't touch the CTS-V in price or performance.

Australia’s Eflin debuts Type 5 Clubman

Fans of the original Lotus 7 will undoubtedly be familiar with Elfin. Others who, like Lotus itself, have come to realize that automotive development has advanced in the past few decades, may be less so. The Australian sportscar-maker is right up there with the likes of Caterham and Westfield, only from the land of reverse-flushing toilettes and leaf-eating marsupials. The company is under the care of Tom Walkinshaw, a legend in the motorsports and tuning communities who has leveraged his close ties with GM's Holden subsidiary for the vehicle you see here, called the Type 5 Clubman. Replacing the discontinued Type 3, the new Type 5 joins the line-up alongside the MS8 Streamliner and was recently unveiled at the ongoing Sydney Motor Show.

The new roadster features the same 260-hp turbo four from the Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Redline, only in a much lighter frame of just 750kg (about 1,650 lbs). The combination of generous power and low weight means the Type 5 is pegged to hit 100 km/h (62mph) in a rapid 3.7 seconds while commanding a sticker price comparable Down Under to a Nissan 350Z or Mazda RX-8, only without frivolities like a roof or doors.

Porsche Carrera GT

You never what you're going to spot when you go for a little joy ride across America. Just moments ago as we crossed from Missouri into Arkansas on Interstate 55, a low slung black car with a big wing rolled by. After a quick double take I grabbed my camera and snapped off a few pics of the first Porsche Carrera GT I've ever seen on the street. If I was going to see one of these I certainly wouldn't have expected it in eastern Arkansas.

Maserati MC12 beats world’s best in super comparo

Despite the fact there is no real "Official 'Ring Record" for production cars, manufacturers never miss the chance to time their fastest cars as they lap the famous German race track. After all, there's a great bit of marketing to be had by claiming that your car is faster than everything else. Maserati realizes this just as much as the next company, and the Italian automaker's MC12 is still 'super' even though it's now three years old. Perhaps even more so, as it recently managed to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 7:24.29. Not only is this an extremely fast time, it betters the marks set by such enviable performers as the Ferrari Enzo, Koenigsegg CCX, Pagani Zonda F Clubsport and Porsche Carrera GT. All of these cars are owned by one (very lucky) man and were tested with the same driver (American Le Mans Series racer Marc Basseng) at the same time and under the same conditions, while lap timing duties went to Europe's evo magazine. All of this lends a dose of credibility to the Trident's accomplishment that's lacking from the incredible 'Ring times that automakers have been claiming lately. So, while not all 'Ring times are created equal, some bragging rights now belong to Maserati.*

Paris 2008: Toyota’s new Avensis arrives

The Euro-only Toyota Avensis is reminiscent of the Lexus IS350 in the same way that you'd tell someone, "You kind of look like someone I know, but not really." It's the rising linear sideline, somewhat high and compact profile, and squared-off rear that do it. But that's from a full-on side profile and around the back. Move around the front and it really just looks like a Toyota. The raked grille and molded lips in the front bumper are unexpected, as is the subtle sexiness of the wagon. Designed in France, the new Avensis grows a little over its predecessor by 5 cm in length and width. Under the hood, possibilities include three new Valvematic gasoline engines, and two diesels, while cogs can be swapped with a 6-speed manual or the dual-mode, Multidrive S automatic.

Toyota’s Vegas-bound Venzas

When you think about the Toyota Venza, we doubt the first thing that comes to mind is customization. But that hasn't stopped Toyota from tapping Street Image, Inc. and long-time partner Five Axis to create a duo of Venza project cars for November's SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

The two low-slung crossovers (don't call them wagons) attempt to highlight and accentuate the active lifestyles of the Venza's core demographic, beginning with the Street Image variant (above) that boasts an upgraded engine and brakes, massive rollers, a lowered ride height, body kit, a black/burgundy interior and a sat-nav-equipped entertainment system. Toyota says the Street Image SportLux version attempts "to give the occupants the feel of a refined sports car while retaining the Venza's utility and functionality." We say, good luck.

Five Axis makes a slightly more compelling case for customizing the Venza with a stow-away rack system created by Magna Car Top Systems that can transport everything from bicycles to skies. New front and rear bumpers, wider fenders and pot-hole averse 20x10.5-inch wheels round out the exterior mods on the Venza AS V.

We'll be checking out both models in Vegas in a few weeks, but check the gallery below now for a preview.

Paris Preview: Fiat Fiorino Qub

Click above for high-res gallery of the Fiat Qubo MPV

The new Fiat Fiorino Qubo is a new multi-purpose vehicle that looks a bit like Kermit the Frog with a massive under-bite. Judging from the photos supplied by Fiat, it's a great vehicle for surfer dudes with hot girlfriends and families with dogs. Considering its got dual sliding doors and airy cockpit, we can imagine that the young guys and gals towards which it's marketed can find plenty to do with the MPV. Think of it as a very Italian Honda Element. Anyway, there are some nice details here, including an interior with six possible seating configurations -- all for a 13,000 euro starting price, which translates to about $18,500 in the States. Two engines are available, a 73-horse 1.4-liter gas-powered four and a 1.3-liter oil-burner with 75 horsepower along with a five-speed stick or six-speed "robotized" automatic. We expect to see the Qubo in person at the Paris Motor Show, soon after which folks in Europe will actually to get to buy one. Read the whole press release after the break and check out the gallery below to view more beautiful people having fun with the Qubo.

2009 Nissan Murano

It just so happens that the all-new 2009 Nissan Murano is one of those nondescript mid-size crossover utility vehicles that may blend into the crowd. Its styling is certainly modern, if not overly exciting. The cabin is accommodating, if not excessively spacious. The handling is inspiring, if not unduly sporty. The engine is strong, and even reasonably efficient. How would this perfectly acceptable, yet hardly over-achieving CUV handle five passengers and full luggage on a 1,000-plus mile road trip across the Southwestern desert? Read on to find out.

2010 Cadillac CTS coupe coming

This past Saturday in Monterey, Cadillac invited a select group of journalists to see the production version of the CTS coupe. Naturally, cameras weren't allowed inside the Caddy tent to keep images leaking out ahead of the coupe's official unveiling this November at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

However, a lack of pictures hasn't stopped InsideLine from going into detail about what the CTS coupe will look like when it rolls onto the stand in LA. According to the report, the coupe is virtually unchanged from its conceptual predecessor, with everything ahead of the A-pillars pulled directly from its sedan counterpart. The massive C-pillars have remained, along with the vertical taillights and steeply raked rear window. Thankfully, Cadillac saw fit to include a back-up camera to make up for the lack of rearward visibility.

Production will begin next summer at GM's Lansing Grand River plant, and while GM execs remain mum on engine choices, expect the same duo of V6s available on the sedan and sport wagon to carry over to the coupe, along with the CTS-V's 550 hp, supercharged 6.2-liter V8 later down the line.

Porsche GT2

Hot on the heels of the GTstreet Cabriolet, TechArt busts loose with yet another GTstreet offering, this time in the form of Porsche’s venerable 530hp (390 kW) 911 GT2 aptly dubbed, GTstreet RS.

The GTstreet RS surpasses the 911 Turbo based GTstreet with 70 more hp for a total of 700hp (515 kW) and 860 Nm of torque. Power is achieved through the use of modified turbochargers, enlarged carbon inlet pipes, specially developed intercoolers, a sports flap exhaust combined with high-performance headers, modified pressure sensor and a sports air filter.

GTstreet RS front apron is fitted with a lower carbon splitter. Also from the top of the bumper fascia a special air duct has been constructed to enable air to pass directly behind the radiator and out through the newly created carbon outlet vents thereby reducing the buoyant force on the front axle considerably. Proving the aerodynamic kit is just as functional as visual, the GTstreet RS achieves in the wind tunnel 10 kilos of downforce on the front and rear axles at a speed of 140 km/h (87 mph).

Other GTstreet RS exterior trimmings include aero-bonnet, headlight shades, mirror shades, GTstreet sill panels and carbon roof spoiler. The GTstreet RS rear spoiler is particularly striking with its carbon winglets and gurney flaps. The GTstreet RS rear apron with carbon diffuser, air outlet and carbon air wings complete the programme for this club sports car.

Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

Mercedes has finally revealed the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series. Based on the recently revised Benz SL65 AMG, the newly blackened version will now be Mercedes most powerful production car ever. With the finely tuned and double-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 under the hood, power is up to an astonishing 661 HP with torque remaining at the already staggering 738 lb-ft. Expected to be priced in the range of $320,000, the SL65 AMG Black Series hits the Benz lineup as an indirect replacement for the McLaren-built SLR coupe. Want one? They won’t be easy to find.

The world’s newest hypercar, the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series, is not only a guaranteed money loser for Mercedes, but a guaranteed success in terms of marketing and branding. From the local pub to the office water cooler, conversations about how great or how terrible it is will perpetuate for many years to come. So, it’s just as fitting that Mercedes launch a flashy (no pun intended) microsite in honor of the 661 hp monster.

2009 Ferrari F149

The worst-kept secret of the year is that Ferrari will be introducing a new car - one that the company insists will not be called the Dino, after the firm's legendary GT - at this fall's Paris auto show. The best-kept secret of the year is what, exactly, that new Ferrari will be.

Thanks to our spy-photographer friends, however, we do know a few things about it. Like, for example, that Ferrari's newest sports car, which is known internally as the F149, has a normally aspirated (although probably direct-injected) V-8 engine in its nose. "If you think the F430's acceleration numbers are impressive," said one Ferrari insider, "just wait."

There's been a lot of speculation that the F149 will be a hardtop convertible, but close inspection of spy photographs leads us to believe otherwise. The F149's A-pillars appear too thin for open-topped rollover protection, and the convex rear glass looks too large to store in the trunk. Rumors also abound that the F149 will be a scaled-down version of the soon-to-be-discontinued 612 Scaglietti two-plus-two, but judging by the looks of the sloping roofline, the rear seats would hold little more than your wallet. (Uh, it's a Ferrari: make that your amply padded wallet.)

Ferrari continues to maintain - as it always has, even in times of woe - that the brand will never abandon its exclusivity in favor of higher volumes. Logically, then, the easiest way to put the brakes on the company's rapidly rising sales is to make its hugely desirable sports cars even more expensive. Thus, the rumors you've heard about the F149 being the "entry-level Ferrari" are true - but such a thing won't happen right away.

VERY CLEVER, THOSE ITALIANS: The front-engine F149 will likely be priced higher than the current mid-engine F430, which for now is the entry-level Ferrari. However, due to the use of more costly lightweight materials, the F430's replacement will be significantly more expensive than the current car. This leaves the F149 to take over the entry-level role. That's a neat sleight of hand - by making the price of entry into the Ferrari club even higher and keeping sales numbers suitably low, the cars from Maranello become even more desirable.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

Over the ensuing 53 years of its life, however, the SL designation has come to mean Sport-Luxury rather than Sport-Light, as more technology and creature comforts were crammed between the rails-to be fair to the original concept, mostly in response to a pampered American buyer who's gobbled up the lion's share of SL production. Engineering has fought a good battle against the resulting weight gains, but the SL came to be seen more often in a country club's parking lot than on a challenging back road...but that's not to demean the car's success. Its reputation as a luxurious boulevard cruiser is golden, but about the only time you'll read SL and sports car in the same sentence is in a company brochure or a biography of Stirling Moss.

The process of sporting up the SL began with a revised exterior that trades the soft lines of the outgoing model for a crisply creased, more masculine presence. The front section is completely new, its pronounced V-shaped nose and larger radiator grille accentuating forward thrust and wide stance, arguably the most dynamic visual elements of a sports car. The single-bar grille, side air outlets, and power domes in the hood link the new look to past SLs, but the steeply sloping front end and new bi-Xenon headlamp clusters, as well as larger side mirrors and new taillamps, help bring the SL into line with Mercedes's current design idiom. It's a big step beyond the understated, almost Q-ship approach of the recent past, but, important when dealing with a company treasure, the 2009 avoids any radical break from the SL's evolutionary path.

2009 Cadillac XLR V

Ever since its arrival in the exclusive world of luxury roadsters in 2004, the Cadillac XLR has been a valued member of this elite club. This is certainly true of the version available in Europe, propelled by the powerful 4.4-litre Supercharged Northstar V8 engine (330 kW / 450 hp) from the famed Cadillac V-series. For model year 2009, the XLR-V has been technologically refined, and the design has been fine-tuned in a number of important respects.
The most obvious refinements can be seen at the front and rear of the car, where a clear family likeness to the prize-winning CTS sports sedan can now be discerned. At the front, new fog lamps are an eye-catching feature, as is the two-piece grille. The redesigned air intakes along the car’s flanks also bring out the family links. The result is an appearance that is more powerful, that matches the capabilities of this luxury, high-performance roadster perfectly.

Lotus Eagle

Never mind all the spy photography - here's the first official look at the 2010 Lotus Eagle, the latest sports car emanating from the house that Chapman built.

Scheduled for an official unveiling at the British motor show on August 22, the Eagle, a 2+2 coupe, is the first all-new Lotus car since the 1995 Elise (the Elise-based Europa S, apparently, doesn't count).

Designed for enthusiasts who need a little more practicality, the Eagle includes a backseat, although, with provisions to anchor car seats, Lotus admits it's a kids-only zone. While the rear trunk was designed to fit a set of golf clubs, customers looking for extra storage space may opt for a two-seat model with a cargo shelf in lieu of the rear seats.

Though Lotus provided only one photograph, it can be seen that the Eagle's shape seems much more organic and proportionate than that of the Europa S. We note, however, that the styling is very derivative of the M250 concept, originally shown to the public nearly eight years ago in Geneva.

Like the Elise, the Eagle sources its engine from Toyota, but this time in the form of a 3.5-liter V-6. Essentially the same motor found in the pedestrian Camry sedan, Lotus tweaked the engine ever so slightly to yield 280 hp. No performance figures have been released yet, but Lotus claims the car is quicker and more stable around the Nurburgring than the Elise.

Production, expected to total 2000 cars per year, will begin in early 2009. Unlike the Europa S, expect the Eagle, in either 2+2 or two-passenger form, to eventually cross the pond into North America.

Lamborghini Diablo GTR

After campaigning the Diablo SV-R for four years in the Diablo Supertrophy Lamborghini launched a completely new car for the 2000 season. This Diablo GTR is a modified version of the 6 litre GT version of the Diablo launched in 1999. In comparison with the Diablo GT, GTR most important features are a modified chassis frame with integrated roll bar, improved suspensions, central fixing nut for the rims, race braking system, additional radiators for transmission oil cooling, very high performance rear wing (directly bolted to the chassis), simplified interiors and weight reduction. The engine is basically the same V12, 6 litre, of the Diablo GT which thanks to the adoption of a specially tuned exhaust system, without catalyser, delivers 590 hp (575 in the GT model).

The engine management system is based on the proprietary Lamborghini LIE electronic engine control system tuned for racing. Fuel injection is sequential multipoint and ignition is static with individual coils. Lamborghini Data Acquisition System, LDAS, and diagnostic functions are integrated in the engine electronic management system.

For the engine cooling, two water radiators in parallel are side mounted to the engine and an engine oil cooler is front mounted as in the Diablo GT. Additional coolers for gearbox and differential oil are installed in order to better match the racing overloads.

The transmission is on the rear wheels through a Lamborghini 5 speed gearbox with one basic gear ratio option and an alternative option for a shorter 5th gear ratio. The gear box lever is in an asymmetric position on the central tunnel in order to be closer to the steering wheel, for better control. The steering system is power assisted.

The tubular chassis frame integrates the roll bar and is directly connected to the rear wing. The front suspension is modified for racing. Shock absorbers and anti-roll bars are adjustable. The rims are lightweight magnesium alloy with central fixing nut and they accept racing type tyres. A special racing fuel tank with fast filling system has been installed. The braking system is based on the Diablo GT high performance module. New racing brake calipers have been adopted to better match the very severe racing conditions.

Most of the body is carbon fibre made, except for the roof, which is made of steel for torsional rigidity, while the doors are made of aluminium, for safety reasons.

The cockpit fittings are simplified to meet racing requirements. The driver seat has been moved towards the longitudinal axle of the car, reducing the size of the central tunnel, to ensure a better driving position. Racing switches for ignition and for other functions have been adopted instead of the series push buttons. The fire extinguisher system is installed on the right side of the cockpit with activating switch on the tunnel. The driver's seat is of racing type with a six-point safety belt and the steering wheel is also racing type.

A production run of 30 cars was planned at the launch of the car at the 2000 Bologna Motorshow, but at the end of the run 40 cars were built.

First official look at the 2009 Acura TL

After all the spy shots we’ve seen up until now, Acura today released the first official image of the 2009 Acura TL. You can take your first look at the front with the milk mustache grille as seen on the 2009 Acura TSX.

The very short press release from Acura said that it will be available in fall of 2008 in two different variants including the first ever use of Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system on a TL. Acura says that the 2009 TL will also feature the most powerful Acura engine ever - we’re guessing that means the range-topper will carry Acura’s 3.7L that produces 300-hp.

Let us know what you think of the new 2009 Acura TL in the comments section.

Pontiac Solstice GXP

Pontiac claims 260 horsepower for now. The turbo Ecotec is capable of more -- much more -- and so the Solstice GXP targa coupe could be advertised at 300 horsepower or more some time after it arrives in showrooms early next year, posing a serious threat to the upcoming 2010 Nissan 370Z, which Pontiac lists as a competitor.

Two things: First, the extra horses, courtesy more turbo boost, intercooling and a new fuel rail, will be available in the GXP convertible, too, and only with the manual gearbox in either coupe or convertible (automatics will be stuck at 260). Second, that's still about 30 horses shy of the 370Z, if the Infiniti G37 is any guide. But the 3.7 is a V-6, of course.

The 300-horsepower Ecotec turbo is probably a short-term engine, as expected interim Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards before the 2020 rule aren't likely to be kind to such high output. The targa coupe also will come with the 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter Ecotec engine.

The car's hatch opens as the rear glass, only, making for better cargo space than the convertible, or about as much as a Mazda Miata's. That means there's no room for stowing the targa roof, so Pontiac plans to offer a folding cloth top for rain emergencies. Pontiac made only minor changes to the body, with a new taillamp assembly to flow more smoothly into the tapered roofline. Manufacturer's curb weight is up 31 pounds, to 2930 for the 2.4-liter and 3018 pounds for the GXP.

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback

The Mitsubishi Prototype-S concept just made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show and Mitsubishi has already announced the debut of the production version, the Lancer Sportback. The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback and Sportback Ralliart will make their debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show in October. The Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback will be introduced to the European market this fall. Pricing details will be announced closer to the launch date.

Power for the Lancer Sportback comes from a variety of engine choices including a 1.5L engine producing 108-hp, a 1.8L engine producing 141-hp and a 2.0L turbo diesel producing 138-hp. Mitsubishi’s new diesel engine will join the lineup in spring of 2009.

The Lancer Sportback Ralliart is powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces a total of 237-hp with a peak torque of 253 lb-ft. Power is transferred to the wheels via Mitsubishi’s Twin Clutch SST transmission with an Active Center Differential.

Neon Lighting - Neon Undercar Kits

Neon lighting as in Neon Undercar kits surely give your car the cool look. You must have seen various cars sporting neon lights and have wondered what exactly is it and how it can project so many colors at one go. Neon Undercar kits are lights that designed in tubes and can be mounted under your car. You can even use them under a truck or on your motorcycle. Car owners to highlight the best feature of their car use them.

You might wonder why use neon lights when you can make do with simple headlights. Well, there are people who use their cars just as a mode of transport to take them from one area to another. However, others believe that the way they project their cars reveal their personality. Certain car owners are obsessed with their vehicles and treat them as an extension of their personality. Neon Undercar kits are available easily online and offline.

The neon lights are easy to install. Most of the kits come with an exhaustive installation manual. The instructions are easy to follow. You might need to do some drilling on the car body. There might be quite a lot of electrical work to be done, but all will depend on the Neon Undercar kit you choose. If you feel that it is too much complicated, then do not worry at all. Numerous custom shops are available, who are willing to do the work for you. You might have to pay a price, but you can be rest assured that they will get a good job done.

There are come issues with neon lights. For example, in certain places, authorities do not appreciate your using neon. Therefore, the best way to avoid paying fines is to have a separate switch to light them up. Avoid having the same switch for your headlights and your neon lights. You can so this, by running a power wire from the battery of your car to the operating switch of the kit. This will help you to bypass the wires meant for activating the main lights of your car. If you live in an area where the LED and neon lights are not allowed, then you must avoid using them. There is no point in inviting trouble unnecessarily.

Before you start with the process of installing Neon Lighting, you need to disconnect the negative battery cable and keep it at a place where it will not be able to touch the body of the vehicle. You must keep the installation manual handy. If you want your neon to light up by itself along with the headlights, then need to work with the wire under the dash near the steering. The wire will usually be Red or Yellow in color. It supplies the control switch with 12V power. The neon lights will light up along with the headlights, once you tap into the wire. If you want to control both the lights separately, then you can connect the power wire directly to the Positive side of the car battery. You can also connect to any 12V power wire from the dashboard.

Neon lighting or Neon Undercar kits can set your vehicle apart from other cars. They give your car a whole new look. The most frequent form of neon lighting is the underbody lights. Your car will get a swanky new look with very less investment. The neon adds a style to your car and the look of your car changes drastically.

2009 Ferrari California

When the Ferrari California made its official debut earlier this month we were given a few details and about three pictures to drool over. Today Ferrari released a more detailed press release with some new pictures of the Ferrari California (some with the top closed). President Luca Di Montezemolo recently got behind the wheel of the California, taking several laps at the company’s Fiorano circuit. Of course he had nothing but good things to say about his company’s latest toy.

“I am very satisfied indeed with the work that the women and men of Ferrari have done,” said Montezemolo. “The California is an extraordinary car and I was delighted with the performance, comfort and driving pleasure it delivered.

So we already know that power comes from a 4.3 liter V8 producing 460-hp that is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. What new info did we learn? Well for one we learned the Ferrari California returns a combined fuel-economy of 18mpg. Oh we also learned that the retractable hard top that closes in just 14 seconds. And that’s about it. Now go drool over the new pics.

Mercedes-Benz M-class

The current-generation Mercedes-Benz M-class has been on sale for three years, so a face-lift was in order. Its arrival coincides with the introduction of the ML's new, Bluetec powertrain, which finally provides diesel performance that's clean enough to be sold in all fifty states, even emissions-finicky California. (Bluetec also hits the R-class minivan and the GL-class large SUV this fall.)

The ML's face-lift itself is the usual fare: a new, three-louver, bigger grille; a larger three-pointed star; new side mirrors; new roof rails; and bolder headlights and taillights. (Like all automakers, Mercedes is maximizing LED and projector-beam lighting technology to create new and interesting shapes for its headlights and taillights. During a sneak preview of the new ML last December at a styling studio in Stuttgart, Germany, Mercedes operatives dimmed the room lights so that we could see the new headlights in action on the face-lifted ML, CLS four-door coupe, and SLroadster.)

Inside, the ML is available with richer materials, including full leather stitching for the dash. There's a new steering wheel, a new seat design, and, more important, the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz's telematics system, including the logical Comand interface that

debuted on the S-class. Hurray for that. The usual array of revised wheels will be offered, and the PreSafe accident-anticipation-and-avoidance system is now standard.

Naturally, the ML's face-lift extends not only to its V-6 and V-8 gasoline models and the ML320 Bluetec but also to the ML63 AMG. Next year, look for an ML equipped with the two-mode hybrid powertrain that GM developed with assistance from Mercedes and BMW.
